What is needed for an IPC?
While 14 CFR 61.57(d) does not stipulate a minimum time requirement for the IPC, a good rule of thumb is to plan at least 90 minutes of ground time and at least two hours of flight time for a solid evaluation of the pilot’s instrument flying knowledge and skills.
Can a CFI give an IPC?
14 CFR 195(d)(6) makes no mention of instrument rating in connection with an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC). There are plenty of instances where an instrument rating is explicitly required, 195(c), for example. Barring some unknown code, it appears a regular CFI is permitted to provide an IPC.
Who can perform an IPC check?
(2) The instrument proficiency check must be given by an authorized check airman or by the Administrator. (d) If the pilot in command is assigned to pilot only one type of airplane, that pilot must take the instrument proficiency check required by paragraph (a) of this section in that type of airplane.
Where would one now locate the current requirements for completing an IPC?
The full list of requirements for conducting an IPC can be found in the current version of the FAA Instrument Rating ACS on page A-11 (2017).
Can you fail an IPC?
You can’t fail an IPC. It’s like taking a FR—if you don’t meet the standards you just don’t finish in that session.
Is an IPC a flight review?
Unfortunately, the IPC cannot substitute for a flight review. They are two different things with different goals and requirements. 14 CFR 61.57d is the governing regulation with regard to the IPC, and it’s pretty short and sweet: Flight review.
Can I file IFR if not current?
There’s no point in filing IFR if you don’t intend to accept a clearance. If you’re not current, you can’t legally accept a clearance. IMC or VMC doesn’t matter, a clearance is a clearance. If you intend to do hood work under VFR, there’s no need to file IFR.
How many approaches are required for an IPC?
Usually an IPC can be completed on least two or three separate training sessions. The PTS requires one precision approach and two non-precision approaches.
Does IPC count as BFR?
An IPC, by itself, does not count as a flight review. While these two tasks can be accomplished on the same flight, the IPC does not require any ground training, while the FR does, and the IPC regulation specifically references the instrument PTS, while the FR references a more general “maneuvers.”
What is Grabcard?
GRABCARD ( IFR Minimum Equipment ) See Acronyms for the Private Pilot. For IFR flying, add GRABCARD to the list.
How do I stay IFR current?
To stay instrument current in an airplane, you must have complied with 14CFR61. 57(c), which states, a pilot must have performed and logged the following task within the preceding 6 calendar months: Six instrument approaches. Holding procedures and tasks.
Does a Cfii need to be instrument current?
So no, there is no requirement for a CFII to be instrument current when providing instrument training. Having said that, 61.65(d)(2)(ii) requires instrument students to do a cross-country under IFR with an instructor.
What are the fuel requirements for IFR flight?
This rule says “no person may operate a civil aircraft in IFR conditions unless it carries enough fuel” to complete the flight and land with enough fuel for 45 minutes of normal cruise.
What is Mel in aviation?
The Minimum Equipment List (MEL) is a document and method aircraft operators use to obtain relief from Federal Aviation Regulations requiring that all equipment installed on the aircraft be operative at the time of flight.
What are the IFR currency requirements?
To remain instrument current, the regulation requires that within the preceding 6 calendar months from the month of the flight, a person perform and log at least; 6 instrument approaches, holding procedures and tasks, and intercepting and tracking courses through the use of navigational electronic systems.
